A partir de una agrupación de los estados africanos según su ubicación en el continente, este libro hace un análisis acabado de los desafíos -calificados como “enormes”- que deberán cumplir las ciudades si quieren que el proceso de urbanización no sea más perjudicial que beneficioso. Las ciudades están experimentando un considerable aumento en su población urbana, y algunas de las amenazas que se presentan en este libro, son la pobreza y los servicios urbanos y de vivienda. Ante este desafío es importante considerar que la estimación para el 2015 es que haya más del doble de habitantes en las ciudades de los que hay hoy.

“To leverage Africa’s options in a environment that is simultaneously global and local, it is important for its leaders at all levels to develop forward-looking visions based analyses of where Africa is now and where it wants to be in the future. The strategic urban visionary agenda for tomorrow should be based on good leadership, anticipation and strategic interpretations of the realities of today. Improving the understanding of where the region is today and suggestions on where Africa may wish to go in the future – and the role of cities an urbanization in these processes- is what this and succesive issues of the State of the African Cities Report series strive to contribute to”.
