“The cities everyone wants to live in should be clean and safe, possess efficient public services, be supported by a dynamic economy, provide cultural stimulation, and also do their best to heal society’s divisions on race, class, and ethnicity. These are not the cities we live in.
Cities fail on all these counts due to government policy, irreparable social ills, and economy forces beyond local control. The city is not its own master. Still, something has gone wrong, radically wrong, in our conception of what a city itself should be. We need to imagine just what a clean, safe, efficient, dynamic, stimulating, just city would look like concretely -we need those images to confront critically our masters with what they should be doing- and just this critical imagination of the city is weak”.
“Las ciudades en las que todos quieren vivir deben ser limpias y seguras, con eficientes servicios públicos, sostenidas por una economía dinámica, entregando una estimulación cultural y, además, haciendo lo mejor para eliminar las divisiones sociales de raza, clase y etnia. Éstas no son las ciudades en donde vivimos.
Las ciudades fallan en todo esto debido a las políticas gubernamentales, problemas sociales irreparables y una economía forzada al control local. La ciudad no es su propio dueño. Sin embargo, en nuestra concepción, algunos han trabajado en la dirección equivocada de lo que una ciudad debería ser. Necesitamos imaginar cómo queremos, concretamente, que luzca la ciudad en términos de limpieza, seguridad, dinamismo, estimulación -necesitamos aquellas imágenes para confrontar críticamente a nuestros autoridades con lo que ellos deberían hacer- y justo esta imaginación crítica de la ciudad es débil”.
