La publicación de esta semana se hizo a partir de las clases que el académico catalán Josep Lluís Mateo dio en el departamento de arquitectura ETH Zurich sobre la práctica contemporánea de la arquitectura en Medio Oriente. En ellas, el arquitecto demostró que si bien existe la creencia de que el mundo árabe es un lugar en donde cuesta realizar cambios, su historia contemporánea ha demostrado lo contrario. Esto se refleja en el estudio de tres ciudades que abordó en su libro -Amán (Jordania), Beirut (Líbano) y Doha (Qatar)- en las que muestra los proyectos arquitectónicos y urbanos más recientes que no sólo desarrollan un estilo propio y con nuevas prácticas sustentables, sino que también reflejan distintas nociones de arquitectura que se están desarrollando en diferentes partes del mundo árabe.

“Growth of cities and construction of infrastructural networks are some of the physical manifestations of modernity, but are not its inventions. At least in the early stages, modernization processes often increase social disparities, just like rapid industrialization and large-scale construction increase environmental perils. Modernization provokes controversies at local and global scales, but the notion that citizens of societies we consider modernized enjoy a higher standard of living and human rights as well as a more even spread of national wealth, still holds. A fast but discontinuous pace of modernization, with striking manifestations in physical reality is another common characteristic of different territories encompassed under the notion of the Middle East”.
