Janette Sadik-Khan fue Comisionada de Transportes de Nueva York durante los mandatos de los alcaldes David Dinkins y Michael Bloomberg. Sin embargo, fue durante el período de este último, entre 2007 y 2013, cuando alcanzó el mayor reconocimiento dentro de Estados Unidos y a nivel internacional.

El enfoque que caracterizó su gestión en el Departamento de Transportes (DOT) fue promover la movilidad sustentable para lo que impulsó destacadas reformas, siendo una de ellas emblemática: la peatonalización de Times Square.

En este libro recoge su trayectoria en el DOT, los programas que ejecutó y cuenta cómo se enfrentó a quienes se oponían a la reducción de los espacios para los automóviles, cómo pudo construir 600 kilómetros de ciclovías, poner en valor los espacios públicos y habilitar 60 nuevas plazas, entre otros logros, que hoy le permiten afirmar que “si puedes cambiar una calle, puedes cambiar el mundo”.

“Times Square became a new touchstone in the annals of city streets, one that is already invoked on every habitable continent. Instead of nibbling around the edges, cities are attempting their own Times Square -transformative projects not in the periphery but in the heart of their downtown districts, where the politics and competing traffic demands for streets are the most volatile.
